The purpose of the document below is to outline the stages of progression for written calculation methods for the four number operations. Written methods of calculation are based on mental strategies, for example number bonds to 10, 20 and 100 and quick recall of times tables and associated divisions.

We understand that methodology may have changed since parents were at school and whilst there are many ways of achieving the correct result, all of which are valid, we encourage our children to explore them all. Hence should you have any questions or are finding it difficult to understand today's methods please don't hesitate to ask your child's teacher.
