Our Eco Council gives children the opportunity to lead positive environmental change within our school and encourage everyone at KCEPS to make greener choices.

Two representatives from each class are elected each year to join the Eco Council. Together, they share ideas, plan projects and help us think about how we can make our school more sustainable and care for the world around us.

What Does the Eco Council Do?

Our Eco Council:

• looks for ways to reduce energy and water use
• encourages everyone to reduce, reuse and recycle
• explores ways to reduce waste and single-use plastics
• helps to care for wildlife and our school environment
• plans and supports environmental projects across the school
• encourages other children to think about the impact of their choices
• takes part in activities and campaigns that help children learn more about the natural world

Through the Eco Council, children develop their leadership, teamwork and problem-solving skills, while learning that the choices we make can have a positive impact on our environment.

Our Current Projects

This year, our Eco Council is particularly keen to support nature within our school grounds. Their ideas include planting more trees, developing an orchard and exploring plans for a school pond.

The children are also looking at ways we can reduce waste by reusing and recycling items such as Halloween costumes, World Book Day outfits and Christmas jumpers.

Our Eco Council also plans to take part in activities including the Big Garden Birdwatch and Big Butterfly Count, helping children to discover and record some of the wildlife around us.

Our Eco-Code

“Growing a love for caring about our world”

Our Eco-Code has been developed to remind us of the simple things we can all do to look after our environment:

O – Our world
Our world is very special and important to us and our families, and we need to look after it.

U – Use cars less
For short journeys, walk to school where possible or consider parking and striding.

R – Remember
Reduce, reuse and recycle.

W – We will grow
Grow flowers and plants that provide food for bees and other wildlife.

O – Only use lights when needed
Turn lights off when we leave a room to help save energy.

R – Reduce water use
Turn taps off as soon as we have finished using them.

L – Look after our environment
Care for our bird and garden areas by feeding the birds, cleaning the bird bath, weeding and growing fruit, vegetables and flowers.

D – Do our best
Keep using our compost bin and look for other ways to reduce waste.
