We actively promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

These values are not taught in isolation. They are developed through our curriculum, assemblies, pupil leadership, School Rights and the wider life of our school. Children are given opportunities to explore different beliefs, cultures and viewpoints; understand their rights and responsibilities; contribute to decisions; and consider the part they can play in their school, local community and wider society.

Through this, we aim to help children develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence, take responsibility for their behaviour, distinguish right from wrong and develop respect for the rights and beliefs of others. These aims are explicitly reflected in our British Values development map.

Democracy

We want children to understand that their voice matters and that they can contribute positively to the communities of which they are part.

Pupil voice provides children with opportunities to share their ideas and influence aspects of school life. Our School Council and Eco Council include representatives elected by their peers, giving children first-hand experience of voting and representation. Council meetings provide opportunities for children to discuss issues that affect them, their classmates and the wider school.

Across school, children are encouraged to express their views, listen to the views of others and understand that decisions may involve different opinions and perspectives.

The Rule of Law

Children learn that rules and laws help to protect us, keep us safe and enable communities to live and work together.

Our School Rights provide clear expectations for life in school and help children understand the relationship between rights, choices and responsibilities. Through school life and the curriculum, children develop their understanding of right and wrong and learn to take responsibility for their behaviour.

Assemblies, PSHE, RE and opportunities for discussion provide further opportunities to consider rules, laws, consequences and responsibility in ways that are appropriate to children's age and understanding. The development map specifically identifies children's ability to distinguish right from wrong and respect the law as an intended outcome.

Individual Liberty

We want children to grow into confident individuals who understand that they can make their own choices while recognising the rights and freedoms of others.

Children are encouraged to express their ideas and opinions, develop their interests and take increasing responsibility as they progress through school.

Our School Rights reinforce every child's right to be safe and feel safe, to learn and to be treated with respect. Children are taught that they can talk to a trusted adult if something is worrying them and are supported to make safe and responsible choices.

Opportunities for pupil leadership and responsibility across the school allow children to develop their confidence, independence and sense of contribution to the school community.

Mutual Respect and Tolerance

Respect for others is central to life at Kings Cliffe Endowed Primary School.

Children learn about different religions, cultures, beliefs and viewpoints through areas of the curriculum including RE and PSHE, as well as through assemblies, discussions, visitors and celebrations. The school's British Values development map identifies these as important ways in which children encounter and explore perspectives beyond their own.

Children are encouraged to listen to others, recognise and value difference and understand that people may have beliefs, backgrounds, families and experiences that differ from their own.

We expect everyone within our school community to treat others with respect. Discrimination, prejudice and behaviour which undermines the rights of others are challenged.

British Values Across Our Curriculum

British Values are developed across the curriculum and through the wider experiences we provide for children.

Our development map identifies opportunities through PSHE, RE, the wider curriculum, assemblies, pupil councils, discussion, visitors and celebrations. In Key Stage 2, for example, the document also identifies Modern Foreign Languages as an opportunity for children to encounter another language and culture, while discussion provides opportunities to consider current affairs, faith, democracy and society.

Together, these experiences help children begin to understand the diverse society in which they are growing up and their responsibilities within it.

We aim for our children to leave Kings Cliffe Endowed Primary School as confident, respectful and responsible young people who are prepared to contribute positively to life in modern Britain.
