Computing
Computing at King's Cliffe Endowed Primary School develops children's knowledge, skills and confidence in using technology. From their earliest experiences with digital devices and programmable toys, children build towards using technology with increasing independence and understanding how it can be used to find information, create content, communicate and solve problems.
An important part of our Computing curriculum is helping children understand how to use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly.
Developing Computing Knowledge and Skills
Our Computing curriculum develops progressively from Foundation through to Year 6.
Children begin by using familiar hardware and software to support their learning and play and showing an interest in programmable toys. As they move through school, they develop their understanding across online safety, using the internet and networking, creating digital content and coding.
Their learning becomes increasingly sophisticated, with children expected to draw upon previous knowledge and make increasingly independent choices about how they use technology.
Online Safety
Online safety is developed throughout our Computing curriculum.
Children begin by learning that they may encounter things online that are not appropriate for them and that they should close and report anything that concerns them. They also learn that people they encounter online may not always be who they claim to be.
As they progress through school, children develop their understanding of personal information, passwords, their online presence, cyberbullying and responsible online communication. Later learning also considers online scams, viruses, untrusted downloads and copyright.
Using the Internet and Networking
Children develop their ability to use the internet effectively and increasingly independently.
Their learning progresses from using simple applications to understanding and using search engines to find information, images and maps. Children learn to refine searches and consider how different search strategies can help them find the information they need.
They also develop practical skills in online communication, including sending messages and attachments.
Computers and Creating Content
Children learn to use a range of digital tools to create, organise and present information and content.
Beginning with familiar hardware and software, children learn practical skills such as logging on and off, opening and saving work, organising files and creating documents. They progress to combining and manipulating text and images and considering how different applications can be used for different purposes.
As they move through the school, children develop experience of creating and editing different forms of digital content, including presentations, animations, data, photographs, video and audio. They increasingly select appropriate applications and devices according to what they want to achieve.
Coding
Children's coding knowledge begins in Foundation through an interest in programmable toys.
They progress to giving and following instructions before learning to control movement, direction and events through age-appropriate software. Their understanding develops to include sequences, user inputs, conditions and variables, giving children increasing control over the programs they create.
As children progress, they encounter increasingly sophisticated concepts, including IF conditions, loops, coordinates and triggers, and learn how these can be combined to control events and objects within their programs.
